About ArchangelosDetails and images of Archangelos

    Archangelos

Archangelos is 30 kilometres from the centre of Rhodes town and is the island’s largest village. The name was chosen in honour of the patron saint of the village, the Archangel Michael.

On entering this village, one is struck by the mini “concrete jungle” appearance of the place. Row upon row of houses, shops, eateries and places of entertainment, jockey for space. It also has a branch of most major banks and even a post office, and the business section is just a bit too congested and busy for a village. However, don’t be fooled by its flashy exterior because the modern outlook of this village does in no way reflect the true lifestyle of the inhabitants – this settlement is regarded as staunchly faithful to village traditions and fiercely patriotic.

    Recommendations for travel Archangelos

    Major attractions include:
Aithonas valley, simply to admire its natural beauty and generally to de-stress.
The monastery of Panaghia Tsambika (the Virgin of Tsambika) which is situated on a very high hilltop with an incredible view of the valley below. Pray to Her if you’re battling to conceive a child and your prays will be answered.
The Cave of Koumelo – an underground natural cave made of many chambers with stalactites and stalagmites. In 1978 excavations revealed that, 4 000 years ago, some people actually lived in this cave.
Kerami – The surrounding region was famed for its wine and the shipbuilding skills of its people from as early as the 7th Century BC. Some archaeological remains can be seen in the region.
Knights castle of the 15th C. AD.
A number of places of worship, such as: the church of Aghia Irini (Saint Irene) with 18thth c. AD frescoes; the church of Kimysis of Theotokos (The Dormition of the Virgin Mary) which is 200 years old; the church of the Archangel Taxiarchis Michail, the biggest in the village and built on the foundations of a much older church, this gracious building is also about 200 years old.
The festival of the Virgin of Tsambika on 8 September. The icon of the Virgin Mary in this monastery is famous throughout the country as it is said to help infertile women to conceive. It sits on a very steep hill, which is reached half-way by car and the other half on foot.
