The most beautiful place adjacent to the village, which is 160m above sea-level, is the valley of Aithonas. This small corner of heaven is tranquil and very green throughout the year (in the past, it enjoyed a richer vegetation than that of the Valley of the Butterflies further up north). Recent excavations in this area uncovered remarkable and rare finds. Fossil plants and trees have also been found in Aithonas valley.
Archangelos produces delicious citrus fruit and pure virgin olive oil. The area is renowned for its talented craftsmen; their hand-made, village-style leather boots, ceramics and colourful hand-woven rugs are testimony to the fact. It is also said that the dome of the world-famous and historic museum of Aghia Sophia in Istanbul, was built of bricks made in Archangelos.
If you want a cool, fresh break from touring under the scorching sun, get into your vehicle and head eastwards from the village, for the bay of Stegna, about 3km away. This is a lovely protected little sandy-gravel cove which is great for kids as the waters are shallow. An adequate canteen, showers, sun beds and parasols and a couple of tavernas, complete the picture.
Archangelos | Archangelos is 30 kilometres from the centre of Rhodes town and is the island’s largest village. The name was chosen in honour of the patron saint of the village, the Archangel Michael.
