About Tripoli - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
The small city of Tripoli is located in the eastern Peloponnese on the broad Mantinea mountain plateau and provides an easy jumping-off point for the nearby hiking areas and adventure travel experiences. Its relatively high altitude keeps it cool in summer, making it a nice retreat from the rest of the Peloponnese which can be both hot and humid during the summer months. Tripoli is built on the site of a very ancient crossroads, so visitors traveling by car may find themselves crossing through Tripoli as they make their way to a variety of locations while traveling over roads originally built thousands of years ago, though fortunately repaved since. Kalamata is to the southwest and Nafplion lies to the east and roads also lead to Patras and Pyrgos. It's on the newer Moreas Motorway; Moreas is another term for this general area of Arcady.
Tripoli is located in the Arcadia area of Greece, a legendary region renowned for its wild natural beauty and supposedly the favorite spot of the goat-footed satyr (or Greek god) Pan.
Tripoli is surrounded by a number of small villages which retain a traditional way of life and which offer some spectacular views, particularly the village of Nestani. Above Nestani is the Convent of Gorgoepikoos, built on the site of an even more ancient temple dedicated to Demeter or Isis.
The ruins of the ancient cities of Tegea and Mantinea are a few minutes' drive from Tripoli. Mantinea is also the site of the Byzantine-era church of Agia Fotini. The site of Mantinea is large and worth a ramble if you are in the region.
The Cave of Kapsis near Mantinea is considered to be one of the most beautiful caves in Greece and can be visited during the warmer months.
In winter, the Menalo Ski Resort at Ostrakinos operates on Mainalo Mountain. Greek ski resorts are bargain-priced compared to most other skiing destinations in Europe
