Trikala region has been inhabited since prehistoric times.
The first signs of permanent settlement were discovered in the cave of Theopetra, and dates from approx. 49,000 BC. Neolithic settlements dating from 6,000 BC Megalo Kefalovriso were discovered in other locations.
The city of Trikala is built on the ancient town of Trikke and Trikke, which was founded around three millennium BC and took its name by Trikke nymph, daughter of Penaeus, or according to others, daughter of the river Asopus.
Trikala | Trikala (Greek: Τρίκαλα) is a city in southwestern Thessaly, Greece and the capital of Trikala regional unit. Town Lithaios cross the river, which is a tributary of Pineios.
According to the National Statistical Service, Trikala is populated by 81 355 inhabitants (2011), while total Trikala regional unit is populated by 131 085 inhabitants (2011)
