The island is located between the islands of Skiathos and Alonissos and has a length of 17 km and a width of 8 km, the largest island in the Northern Sporades group of islands. The landscape is dominated by two mountains that reach elevations of over 500 m, Delphi tip with 681 m altitude, and reaching a height of 546 m Palouki. Skopelos Island unfolds like an amphitheater bordered by chic beaches washed by the waters of the Aegean Sea. Pine forests seem to forget that their place is among rocks and often extend to near the waterfront.
Skopelos Island hosts no fewer than 360 churches and chapels, so that all those who are passionate about architecture and interiors Greek holy places will be delighted that they chose that destination Skopelos Island. Only in Hora you will find 123 churches. One of the most famous church on the island is the church of Agios Ioannis.
Among the most beautiful holy places include Church of St. Athanasios and located near the Venetian castle (island enjoys the presence of many buildings reminiscent of Venetian architecture, Venetian Castle dates from the thirteenth century and was built on the ruins of the ancient city Peparithos) Church Saint Nicholas and Saints in Vrahos Church and Temple Evangelismos which enjoys a position absolutely spectacular, high on a cliff above the sea.
Beyond the capital, waiting Episkopi Monastery, situated at a distance of about 2 km from Hora. It was built in 1078 during the Venetian rule. Also in Kastri, a settlement located near the village of Glossa, Saint Ioannis Prodromos Monastery lies, dating from the eighteenth century. It is situated at an altitude of 100 m above sea level, and those wishing to visit will have to climb about 200 steps, but panoramas dream will be a reward as effort.
Capital of the island, Hora town is notable for its wooden houses with balconies and colorful roofs, but also because of large number of restaurants, tavernas, cafes and shops.
The nearest beach is Agnondas Hora, a small beach which enjoys a quiet bay, a cafe situated at the shade of pine trees and three taverns. The beach is covered with sand, but it is not equipped with facilities such as umbrellas or sunbeds. Agnondas is a village located at a distance of about 8 km from the capital city and is equipped with a port, used only in case of bad weather, when the main ports of the island - Hora and Loutraki (fishing village located at a distance of 25 km from Hora) - can not be used.
Another famous beach is Panormos beach hosted by the village of the same name. It lies at a distance of 18 km from Hora and is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island and, consequently, one of the busiest. It is decorated with lounge chairs and umbrellas that can be used free of charge, as provided by taverns located on the beach (their use is subject to consummation in taverns). The water is quite deep in the area so it would be advisable to closely supervise children.
Located at a distance of about 18 km from Hora, village Elios / Neo Klima is the youngest of Skopelos island villages. The village attracts visitors mainly because of the beaches that are near you. Among them stands Elios and Hovolo beaches. Elios beach is covered with sand and is divided into two areas: an area equipped with umbrellas and sunbeds and a quieter area, hidden from the bustle of tourists. Near the main beach strip, are several other tiny beaches covered by gravel.
If you prefer a secluded beach, you can choose the destination Hovolos beach. The beach is endowed with a feral beauty, the landscape is dominated by fine sand and crystal green waters that mix with rugged white cliffs.
In southern island of Skopelos, you will discover one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, beach Limnonari. The beach is ideal for those traveling with children because the waters are so quiet that gives the impression of a lake. You can get here by boat, bus or car, but the road will not lead directly to the beach, the walk takes you through a journey of about 700 m.
