The village is located in Gulf Gerakini Toroneos between the two arms, Kassandra and Sithonia in Halkidiki, 80 km from Thessaloniki and 65 kilometers from Thessaloniki International Airport.
There is a legend that a queen called Yerakina (Gerakini) lived there once, and here Gerakini took its name.
Gerakini is composed of three different areas:
The middle and the village itself, where the church and police station. The villagers are farmers, mainly olive growers to produce olive oil and olives.
The northern part, where all inhabitants are workers and technicians who work in mining and extraction of magnesite (λευκόλιθος lefkolithos "white stone"), as raw material, a valuable ore white, as white stone, for various uses. The first mine was opened in the early twentieth century. Ships from around the world come to Gerakini to carry this "white stone" which has various uses.
Great Southern is well known by tourists from many countries as a great place for summer holidays. Resort development began in the early seventies, when they opened hotels and other facilities to serve the ever increasing demand for accommodation.
