Lamia is the capital city of the region Phthiotis (central mainland Greece), considered the birthplace of the legendary character Achilles. It is located at the foot Othrys. Acropolis site is currently occupied by a medieval castle.
It is believed that the city is named after the mythological Lamia, daughter of Poseidon.
Archaeological excavations have shown that the current territory of Lamia city has been inhabited since the Bronze Age (3rd millennium i. Hr.), But the city was first mentioned after the earthquake of 424 BC., When it was an important military base Spartan, due to its strategic location, with control over the coastal plain and the area that connected southern Greece to Thessaly and the rest of the Balkans.
On another hill town is situated Ayos Loukas church, built in sec. XIX-XX, with an impressive view of the bay and the shores of the island of Euboea Maliac.
Administrative buildings, hotels and taverns are grouped around four main squares in the city, each with its characteristic traits: the cathedral, plane trees and fountains, statue of revolutionary hero Athanasios Diakos emblem statue representing Greece.
