About LAFKOS - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Lafkos is a traditional and mountainous picturesque village, located 45 km. from Volos, and built at an altitude 330 m. It was built on the slope of a hill that offers magnificent and open view towards to Milina, the islet Alatas and the Pagasitic gulf.
Near the village are many natural paths that lead to Milina, Mikro or the small hamlet Hondri Ammos with the pebbled beach. The path that offers many alternated sceneries is the one that starts in Lafkos and passes through a magnificent route with rich vegetation and spring waters, ending at the beautiful beach of Agios Konstantinos in village Paltsi.
Close to the main square of the village, is the cultural association, that also operates as a folklore museum, where you can see large collections of old books, house hold equipment, tools and decorative ornaments.
The large paved square is surrounded by traditional tavernas, restaurants and cafes, where you can enjoy a tasty meal, coffee or tsipouro, sitting under the shade of the centuries old plain trees.
Few kilometers east of the village, is the monastery of Agios Athanasios that is dated since 1795 and offers an impressive sight. The monastery was built by Dimos Zapaniotis, a traditional technician, and financed by a great hero of the Grekk revolution Stergios Basdekis.
The marble decorations were created by the artist MIlios. The monastery is situated inside a gorge with rich fauna, and if you are interested to pay a visit, you must aks for directions from the town hall of Lafkos, that is situated in the main village square.
At the monastery a large religious festival takes place on the 1st and 2nd of May, with traditional music, dance and songs. Traditional food is also offered to those who attend. Another religious festival takes place in the main square of Lafkos on the 25th of July.
The village is included in the routes of the KTEL buses of Magnesia, with daily connections to and from the city of Volos. For your medical needs you will be serviced at Argalasti’s Medical Center and also from the local surgery of Lafkos.
