Kozani is a city in northern Greece and the capital of Western Macedonia and Perfecturii Kozani. The settlement is situated at an altitude of 710 m above sea level, 15 km from Lake Polyfitos and 120 km from Thessaloniki (Salonika). The city Kozani, comes with high probability of glory: "Koza" means "shell skin. The city was a center of viticulture and production of milk, fur, etc..
The most famous aspect of the city and local color is Carnival, which usually take 40 days before Easter and before the start of Orthodox Lent. Latest research has proved that it comes from a Dionysian cult (known in ancient Greek culture).
Kozani city was founded by the Christian population expelled by the conquering Ottomans and the Balkans is located in a mountainous region of forests protected.
Kozani earthquake struck the region on 13 May 1995 had a magnitude of 6.6 degrees on Richter scale and was ended only with disasters materials: many of the buildings destroyed property in the past centuries, which have not been restored, the only Today's buildings are maintained by the church steeple, the old town hall building, and city museum.
