About Koskinou - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Koskinou, located on the east side of the island, just outside Rhodes town (around 7km) and 8.5 km from the island’s main holiday resort of Faliraki, is a traditional village dating back to the 15th century. The village took its name from the main occupation of its inhabitants who used to manufacture sieves (a sieve means ‘koskino’ in Greek). At first sight Koskinou does not seem particularly impressive but as soon as you make your way into the maze of narrow streets of the old part of the village you will be charmed forever. Koskinou is especially famous for its unique traditional houses with their facades painted in bright, vibrant coulours, red, turquoise, blue and yellow, doors with carved designs, fine stone porches with arches and the lovely little black and white ‘chochlaki’ pebbled-floor gardens, unique to Rhodes.
Don’t miss out on visitng the ‘Traditional House’ decorated with handmade woven carpets and ceramic plates on the walls, situated in the centre of the village, and the beautifully decorated village church built in1873. If you are a a sightseeing buff and love history, you have to know that Koskinou area is of a great archeological interest with its findings dating from the 4th century BC. Pay also a visit also to the medieval castle from the 13th century, as well as to the Christian Chapels of Marina, Eirini and Loukas (built in the 4th century). Koskinou has captured the hearts of quite a number of local artists and foreigners as well, who on a visit fell under the spell of unique charm of this colourful place and decided to stay for good. Koskinou with its warm and friendly residents, tranquil surroundings, memorable sunsets, cooling northern breeze, its close proximity to both the city of Rhodes and to a number of crystal-water beaches is a must visit. There is a major festival held here on July 17th when the village celebrates the name day of Agia Marina with traditional music and dancing. Koskinou is definitely worth being on your Rhodes holiday destinations map.
