Gastouri village is also known as Aсhillеiο, because the famous Асhillеiоn Palace is only 500 meters away from the entrance to the village.
Empress Elizabeth, the wife of the Emperor of Austria, known as Sissy, fell in love with the island of Corfu. Thus begins the story of the Achillion palace, built in 1890 in the village of Gastouri, at the request of Empress Sissy, it becoming the favorite summer residence. Later Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany bought the castle. The palace is absolutely spectacular, surrounded by gardens, overlooking the sea and the city of Corfu, offering a view that deserves dozens of photos. It is ideal for romantic walks and part of it houses a museum.
Gastouri is located on the east side of Corfu island, near Bitsits and Pеrаmа. Benitses resort is 4 km from Gastouri and Kinоpiаstеs 2 km, where you can find restaurants, shops and petrol stations.
Agiоs Gοrdiоs large sandy beach is 15 minutes away by Gastouri car.
The old part of the village has some alleys accessible only on foot and you can see beautiful old houses built in traditional architectural style. The new part of the village is near the Aşhillеiоn Palace, where you can see new houses, in the same architectural style. There are several restaurants near the road.
