About Epirus - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
A rugged mountain region, located on the periphery of Epirus Ancient Greek world. It was inhabited by Greek tribes Chaonians, Molossians, and Thesprotians. Within the sanctuary of Dodona finding regions oldest ancient Greek oracle, and the second after the Oracle of Delphi prestigu. Merged into a single state in 370 BC by Dynasty Aeacidae, Epirus reached fame during the reign of Pyrrhus of Epirus, whose campaigns against Rome are at the origin of the term "Pyrrhus victory". Epirus subsequently became part of the Roman Empire, along with the rest of Greece in 146 BC, then was part of the Byzantine Empire. After the fall of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusade, Epirus Despotate of Epirus became the center of one of the successor states of the Byzantine Empire. Conquered by the Ottoman Empire in the late fifteenth century, Epirus became semi-independent during the reign of Ali Pasha in the nineteenth century, but the Ottomans reasserted their control in 1821. Following the Balkan Wars and World War I, the southern Epirus became part of Greece, while the northern Epirus became part of the newly created state of Albania.
Epirus is a rural and unspoiled part of the Greek mainland often missed by tourists because it is tucked away in the north western corner of the country, next to Albania.
However, Epirus has much to offer the discerning traveler. Wonderful historic sites… stunning scenery (coastal and wetland, mountains and valleys, gorges and rivers)… beautiful beaches…. picturesque and traditional villages… it has it all!
Those who enjoy a relaxing holiday will find Epirus the perfect location - it is traditional Greece at its most peaceful and laid back. There are plenty of beaches along the attractive coastline,from long sandy beaches to shingle coves.
For the more active person, there is walking, climbing and horse riding, as well as a wealth of places to visit, such as archaeological sites, museums or cultural centres. There are also many natural sites of great beauty worth visiting. All of these can be reached easily, either on foot or by car.
