Further south lies Drios, with luxuriant vegetation and many water springs, a picturesque village with lovely beaches, ideal place for pleasurable walks. A place that attracts many visitors year after year.
Here, you will be able to see the ancient trenches carved in the seaside rocks for the repair or the sheltering of the ships. In 400m above Drios stands the monastery of St. George, while to the south of the monastery lies the cave of Kalpakis, with stalactites and stalagmites, and was inhabited since the prehistoric times.
Moreover, you will be able to see Pyrgaki with its prehistoric settlement, built on a bay, east of Drios. Throughout the area there are hotels, rooms to rent, restaurants, taverns, ouzo shops, music bars, all kinds of shops for your souvenirs and your everyday needs, facilities for water sports (windsurfing, scuba diving etc. ) and other activities, car and motorbike renting offices and travel agencies for every information or assistance you may need.
The area is very well connected, by public transportation with the airport (just 10 km. from Drios) and the port of Parikia. On Good Friday, Marpissa hosts the re-enactment of Passion Week and on Easter Sunday the festivity of Love, which unites all the inhabitants and friends of the area around the traditional roast lamb with local wine and traditional local dances.
Other festivities are those of the Ascension of Christ, in Pisso Livadi, with seafood, wine and ouzo, where the local boys and girls are dressed in their traditional costumes and the festivity of St. John in late June, with the 'burning of May' and satirical songs; and finally the festivity of the Transfiguration (6th of August) in Marpissa, with various cultural activities.
