The architecture of villages in Dodecanese do not have the bright colors of the Cyclades islands. They have more earthy colors and their architecture is Medieval, with strong Venetian castles on top of hills and old towns with paved streets, arches and elegant mansions. The Old Town of Rhodes is the most famous village and among the best-preserved Medieval towns in Europe. Many seaside villages are tourist developed, while the mountainous villages keep their traditional character intact. Very interesting villages to visit, apart from Rhodes Town, are Lindos in Rhodes, Olympos in Karpathos, Zia in Kos, Skala in Patmos and Chorio in Simi.
The beaches in Dodecanese islands stand out for their relaxing atmosphere and the crystal water. Some beaches are organized, while others are secluded. However, they are all clean and each one offers something special to visitors. The busiest beaches are found in Rhodes and Kos, while the island of Karpathos has the most exotic waters with a fabulous dark blue color. The beaches in the rest of the group are peaceful and great for families. If you like sports, windsurfing is widely practiced in certain spots of Rhodes, Kos and Karpathos.
Rhodes and Kos are the islands with the most luxurious resorts in Dodecanese. Accommodations in the other islands are more traditional with simple facilities.
