Corinth is a Greek city on the Isthmus, the original isthmus, the narrow strait linking the Peloponnese to mainland Greece. Corinth is about 78 km west of Athens. Isthmus is now crossed by a canal. Corinth is the capital of Corinth prefecture. The city is surrounded by mountains Lechaio, Kalamaki, Loutraki and Geraneia.
In ancient Greece, Corinth was the most important city after Athens, was inhabited since the Stone Age. Back then he was one of the most important east-west trade centers and the cult of Aphrodite. The city was known by the high prices imposed on foreigners. From there he started saying: "There's really nothing a trip to Corinth. " In 146 BC city was destroyed by the Romans, and then 100 years later it was rebuilt by Julius Caesar as a Roman colony.
The port of Corinth, located north of the city centre and close to the northwest entrance of the Corinth Canal, serves the local needs of industry and agriculture. It is mainly a cargo exporting facility.
