Just 2 km from the town of Zakynthos, at the top of the hill is the town of Bochali. Overlooking the harbor, neighborhoods and streets below (as well as Argasi on the right), you can admire the wonderful views of Zakynthos Island, the sea and beyond. It is famous for the amazing panoramic view of the city, which reaches the azure waters of the Ionian and Peloponnese. The famous poet Dionysios Solomos, here found inspiration, on the Strani hill he composed his most famous poem, lyrics that later became the National Anthem of Greece. There are numerous cafes, restaurants and terraces where you can enjoy the wonderful view.
The village has long been under Venetian, French, British, Russian and last but not least Ottoman rule. After the 1953 earthquake that destroyed most of the villages on the island, Bochali was partially restored, and gradually reached its present stage.
Here you will find the Venetian Castle, located in a pine forest. It is also worth visiting the Maritime Museum, where many artefacts from the Greek Revolution, the first and second world wars, are kept and offers a detailed description of the Greek navy.
In the area were made archaeological discoveries that brought to light very old churches, since ancient times, such as, for example. Anaphonitria Monastery, the monastery where St. Dionysius was a monk, who is also the patron saint of the island.
The houses in Bochali played an important role during the Greek Revolution, against Turkey in 1821. St. George's Chapel of Filikon, was the meeting place of a secret society planning attacks and sheltering all asylum seekers from mainland Greece.
Bochali is a very picturesque place that is definitely worth visiting.
