About Alikampos - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
As a fortified village Alikambos has played a crucial part in many of the historical battles and takeovers of this lovely island, and although the village was raised to the ground on several occasions there are some fine examples of ancient monuments still standing within the vicinity. Perhaps the most well known is a small Byzantine church dedicated to The Assumption of St Mary, which in 1315 was decorated internally by John Pagomenos, one of the finest European artists of wall paintings at this time. The particular paintings in Alikambos are considered some of the best remaining examples of his work and certainly worth a look if you are in the area.
There are other interesting archaeological sites nearby such as the church of Constantine and Helen which dates back to 1000AD, and also the site of a Byzantine monastery.
Endless tales exist about the role of the villagers of Alikambos during the many battles in this area, one thing for certain is that being hidden away in the mountains, Alikambos has long been a shelter for rebellious fighters and bandits. It was certainly in the centre of the revolutionary action during the Turkish occupation and there are heroic stories about the villagers being ousted by the ruling Turks, and later fighting to defend their independence. It is not surprising therefore that the inhabitants here are noted as being very strong willed and of a very determined nature, especially when it comes to protection of their family and land.
Alikampos | Alikambos is found in the province of Apokoronas. Today the village belongs to the municipality of Kryonerida of the prefecture of Chania. The village Alikambos is located at the foot of the White Mountains, on the road leading to Sfakia on the south coast
