Ioannina is the capital of Epirus in Greece, with a population of 100,000, at an altitude of 600 m above sea level. It is the capital of a prefecture of Greece with the same name. The city is located on the west side of Lake Pamvotis.
It lies at an elevation of approximately 500 meters above sea level, on the western shore of lake Pamvotis. Ioannina is located 450 km northwest of Athens, 290 km southwest of Thessaloniki and 80 km east of the port of Igoumenitsa in the Ionian Sea.
