The only town on the island is situated on the east coast, in a bay scattered with small islets. Away from the waterfront, the narrow streets wind past traditionally whitewashed houses with their picturesque red roofs.
The waterfront itself, a bustling, lively scene, is split in two by the Bourtzi promontory, which boasts a medieval fort, and holds open-air summer concerts. To one side is the Old Harbour, lined with cafes and restaurants, and with an evening fish market;
boats from here will take you to various beaches around the island. The new port is the stopping-point for all ferries, and is also the place to catch the hourly buses, or taxis.
